Welcome to Lucca: a town to discover by bike

Lucca is a small medieval town in the heart of Tuscany.

Its strategic location and its liveability make it a quiet, pleasant and desirable tourist destination.
Many famous people have been linked to this ancient village: some that stand out among these include Dante Alighieri, who spent much his exile from Florence in Lucca, the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte, Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, to whom the Porta Elisa gate in the city walls was dedicated. The two great prides of the city are still, however, the great composer, Giacomo Puccini, born in Lucca in 1858 and author of wonderful operatic works, such as "La Boheme" and "Madama Butterfly", and the city walls.

The Walls of Lucca are the only example in the world of a fully accessible walled enclosure with a perimeter of about 4.2 km around the historic centre of the city; already in the second half of the nineteenth century it was transformed into a pleasant pedestrian promenade. The entire route is ideal for running, walking and cycling as no motor vehicles can pass through it.

The historic center is also predominantly pedestrian or reserved for residents only. Preserving its original appearance, the city includes various architectures of enormous value, towers, bell towers and monumental Renaissance palaces of valuable stylistic linearity, such as the numerous medieval churches; it has been nicknamed the "city of a hundred churches". Famous urban space is Piazza Anfiteatro, built on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater by Lorenzo Nottolini.
Among the important squares we remember Piazza San Michele, the historic center of the city, Piazza San Martino, the religious center where the duome of San Martino stands and Piazza Napoleone, today the main square of the city.

Lucca and its Walls are therefore the ideal destination for a sightseeing tour on foot, a classic or e-bike tour, a tourist visit by electric scooter or an excursion by footbike.

And the surrounding hills, rich in vineyards, olive groves, family farms, vineries and historic villas, have nothing to envy to the most renowned landscapes of the Tuscan countryside, and the sea and the mountains just a stone's throw away, make the territory of Lucca one of the most various from all over Italy.

Lucca is therefore the ideal destination also for those who love to get away from the artistic beauties of the center and embark on excursions by hybrid bikes, mountain bike, along nature trails, to reach natural landscapes where to relax or a farm for a wine tasting and taste local products; and for those who want to try new experiences, there are water activities such as sup, stand up paddle, canyoning, rafting or in the air, such as tandem paragliding.

Have a nice holiday!
